Defined Audience Marketing

The alternative to renting your audience, one campaign at a time, forever.

Defined Audience Marketing: the discipline of identifying every person who matters to your business, by name, and building owned relationships with them on the channels their behavior rewards. The alternative to renting anonymous audiences from advertising platforms that charge every time you want to reach the same people.

The problem with renting

Most B2B marketing is a lease. You describe the people you want to reach, a platform sells you a moment of their attention, and when the campaign ends, the audience goes back to whoever rented it to you. Next quarter you pay again. Same people, higher price. And you're bidding against every competitor who described the exact same audience.

The price only moves one direction. The auction is built to convert your urgency into its margin. Your agency won't save you either: when the agency earns a commission on volume, every problem looks like a volume problem. When it doesn't work, the answer is more.

Here's the test. After all that spend, ask what you own. No relationships. No standing. Nothing that carries into next quarter. The budget bought motion, not property.

The alternative is ownership

A defined audience is a list of names, not a demographic. The specific people who can buy from you, refer you, or advocate for you. Identified one at a time. Reached personally. Accumulated over years.

Relationships don't behave like ad spend. They outlast the campaign. They compound, because every relationship makes the next introduction warmer. Platforms rise and fall around them and they don't much care. No auction can reprice them, and nobody's algorithm update can take them away.

That's the whole argument, honestly. Renting buys reach that expires. Owning builds reach that appreciates.

How it works

Defined Audience Marketing is a practice with four parts. Each has its own page.

The Concentric Audience is the structure: a named Core of the decision-makers who matter most, worked personally on every channel, and an Extended ring of the people around them, warmed by email and advertising. One audience, mapped in rings, each ring reached the way it responds. (Read: The Concentric Audience)

The 4C Method is the path: Consider who already refers and trusts you, Create the strategy around them, Collaborate with your first ring as partners rather than prospects, and Connect with the people who matter through the relationships you already hold. (Read: The 4C Method)

The Audience Structure Audit is the instrument: before a dollar is spent, we read your audience's actual communication infrastructure and objectively determine which channels can physically reach them and which cannot. Strategy routed by evidence, not by habit. (Read: The Audience Structure Audit)

Evidence and Measurement is the standard underneath all of it: every result measured, vanity signals excluded, and a standing commitment we publish in plain sight: if we find something that works better, we will switch to it and tell you. (Read: Evidence and Measurement)

Why "defined"

The name is literal. The audience is defined the way a list is defined: names, not descriptions.

We've worked this way since 2018, when we built our first system to grow our own business. The relationships it created didn't expire the way campaigns do. Some of them became our largest clients, and those clients asked us to run the system for them. When the practice needed a name, it needed one that said what actually makes it different. The audience isn't targeted. It's defined.

What compounds

The real advantage shows up in year two. And year five. And year ten.

Every relationship widens the circle of people who are one introduction away. Every conversation sharpens the map. Every campaign starts warmer than the last, because the asset carried over. There are institutions that have worked this way for decades. They reach entire companies through relationships alone, at a cost their competitors can't understand, because their competitors start over from zero every quarter.

Most marketing budgets get spent. This one accrues.
